A MOST AMUSING ANGLE

BANKSY V BRISTOL
Went to the Banksy exhibition at Bristol Museum in 2009, and it was really amusing.
Although the topics he highlights are serious, such as politics, cruelty to animals, surveillance, war, police state and so on, he presented his viewpoint with first class streetwise satirical wit.
Most folk are familiar with his stencil/wall graffiti work so I've plucked out a few photos showing some of his other types of art pieces.

DIM FOR LIFE
To all the impostors in the fake family club known as the Illuminati - you do not become illuminated by telling lies and making wrong decisions.
The dunce hat suits you.
You're as dim as it gets...but remember and keep it a secret..!!

CAR PARK PLANT
I took this photo in a car park in Gloucester.
Quite an amusing image in itself - but it becomes more amusing when you discover it was on the side of a building that had a shop called Bow Bells - a florist..!!

GOATS EGGS?
I was cycling through a Cotswold's village called Gretton back in the mid 90's and spotted this quirky carving.
Quite a size it was, sculpted out of a tree trunk.
An auk? A penguin? Not certain but a bit of amusement with the sign beside it.
The way it was written makes it appear like the goats laid eggs..!!

BIZARRE BIRDS
Talking about strange birds, this image is full of them.
It's by James Marsh and wittily titled "Dawn Chorus".
As you can see ,the birds take on the shape of various musical instruments.
Even the nest is a drum!

SEEING DOUBLE
Another creature made up of substitute body parts is this WFMU fly.
A ghetto-blaster face feeding on a tape, a microphone for a body and the veins of its wings spelling out WFMU.
Nice bit of work.

CONCRETE CLIFF
An alternative interpretation of a double image is the example above.
A cliff-face with a choppy sea is what you recognise it as, but it's not all it appears to be.
I did this in 2019.
I found a piece of concrete with grooves etched into it and so I did a rubbing from it using chalky crayons.
To me it looked like a cliff, so I turned the block around 90 degrees to make the grooves go horizontally and rubbed on the added waves.
Finished it off by drawing around a bottle cap for the sun.
Hey presto, a moody coastal landscape, completed in 2 minutes.

SHADOW ILLUSIONS
From a cliff to the shadows...
The top image is a bit deceptive.
On first glance you naturally assume that the tree in shot is casting the shadow on the warehouse wall - then after a small delay, you realize it can't be because that would mean the sun would have to be positioned low down on the left. However, you can see by the ridges on the building that the sunlight was coming in from the right - therefore the shadow you see is from another tree that is out of frame.
The other shadow I found quite amusing when I saw it had landed on this outer wall, and was in the same central position as the autumnal detail on the building behind it.
However, the building behind me that cast this shadow mimicking the triangle, was of a completely different design to the one with the red foliage.
This quirky coincidence was snapped in Gloucester in the 90's, as was the top one.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING
I don't dip into pre 1960's stuff very often but I really do like this cartoon from the 1950's.
Witty idea of historical architectural styles going into building one block of flats.

ABSTRACT GRAFFITI
Got this book a few years ago on the subject of abstract graffiti.
Really cool documentation of graf work from around the globe, all categorised as abstract.
It's quite a broad classification as it covers straight forward abstractness (geometric shapes, textures, etc) along with eco-art, conceptual art, slogans and so on, some of which appeal to my sense of humour.
The example I have above amuses me, in that I like the BOLD way the paint has been applied, looking at first as if it was just thrown on unrestrained, but you can see there was a lot of thought & control behind it, with the blue paint gradients, which areas were done - areas kept black, a touch of white & red perfectly in the correct position, giving a definite sense of proportion & composition.
Great end result!
Leaves me cheery and upbeat.
It was done by KR in New York in 2008.

SQUIRREL RAMPANT & CROSSBILL FLAGS
There are no native lions in Scotland, let alone red ones.
The Fleur-De-Leys around the frame represent France.
So to fix it...
Out with the African lion - in with the red squirrel.
Out with the French lilies - in with the thistles.
Now it's 100% Scottish.
St Andrew was a native of Galilee and was crucified in Greece - this is what the original cross represents - there is nothing Scottish about it.
So replace the St Andrew cross with that of a crossbill, a true native of Scotland.
Now it's 100% Scottish.

HIGHLAND DANCE
This is the first issue of a rare Scottish magazine called Highlander.
A quick glance at the cover may have you think it is full of articles about grouse shooting and strewn with whisky adverts, but it is actually a mag about club culture.
It came out in 1993, was published in Dundee, and covers what's happening in the underground clubs around the north-east of Scotland - which means plenty of music, DJ's and dancefloor activity in the mix.
Much of it is written in a humorous manner however, so lots of tongue in cheek references, lighthearted articles, jokey quips and cartoons.
So as well as being able to find out what's going on in clubland, you also get a bit of a laugh along the way.

VINYL JUNKIE
One of the cartoonists who contributed to Highlander magazine was Dundonian, Mark Wallace, who himself was a DJ.
I was living down south during this time, but still managed to see Mark's cartoon strips because his work also cropped up in a midlands magazine called Vibe. A great source for jazzy grooves.
This was a serious mag however, for jazz enthusiasts, but above is one such example of MW's work in Vibe, a comic strip called Vinyl Junkie, done in 1995.
Published in Birmingham, but with Dundee shout-outs!

FLYING UNDERGROUNDI'm very fond of this clever flyer which dates back to summer 1992.
Firstly it refers quite literally to the word "flyer", by using it to spark the aviation theme design. Secondly it has the flip side designed as a flight ticket which provides all the information about the underground dance event, substituting flight details with club / DJ / music details. A witty piece of work from Cheltenham. |

REAL FAKE NEWS
I have read a few truth-styled blogs and watched similar videos that refer to a website called Real Raw News.
However, this website does not present real factual news stories, but instead, their content is actually humour based.
If you go onto the Real Raw News site, and click the "About Us" tab, you will be able to see they have a disclaimer which states the website is for "entertainment purposes".
It adds - "this website contains humour, parody and satire".
So all of you who are passing information on from Real Raw News and referring to it as Intel, it is not.
If you want to waken people up using factual real life sources, you have to avoid this website.

SNAKES ALIVE!
In the bible, the snake represents evil / Satan.
In real life, a snake kills its victims by constriction.
In real life, a snake kills its victims by injecting poison.
Using your intelligence, does this seem like a good choice of creature to represent medicine?
Consider this...
The World Health Organization have a snake on their logo.
A snake squeezes the air out of its victims lungs.
Human equivalent - Corona virus depriving air to lungs.
A snake injects poison into its victims bloodstream.
Human equivalent - deadly vaccine injected into bloodstream.
Does a snake really symbolize good health?
Consider this...
Ambulances and medics have a snake on their logo.
Snakes have fangs, not teeth.
Humans have teeth, not fangs.
The only character depicted with fangs is a vampire.
Vampires extract human blood and victims end up anemic.
Is a snake a good choice of creature to represent a caring medical profession?
Consider this...
Well known sayings with snake references are all negative.
To talk with a forked tongue - deceit.
A snake in the grass - betray.
A nest of vipers - treachery.
Lower than a snakes belly - low morals.
Snake eyes - worst possible outcome.
Would advertising agencies use such wording as slogans to sell medical products?
Having a snake represent medicine, makes it seem like those in charge of our health are not of sound mind.
There will be no applause from me.

SMILE !
A dentist I used to go to had a life-size model skull on his desk.
Needless to say, the teeth were shown to be in perfect condition.
The thinking behind it was, the model made a good advert for his profession.
However, my viewpoint was that it didn't convey his profession at all.
A skull with a perfect set of teeth is what it looks like before a person visits a dentist.
For the skull to portray the dentist trade accurately, there would have to be gaps where teeth were extracted and teeth with a few fillings.!!
